Happy Congo Newses!

In response to yesterday’s hissyfit, a number of readers sent me non-rape-related news from the Congo. (Although sadly, none of them have any tips on the whereabouts of Nkunda’s goat.) Here are the highlights:

Apparently, Congo is getting a bridge… to the other Congo! According to a PR release inexplicably sent by the aforementioned other Congo to one of our helpful readers, the two Congos are planning to link their capital cities (Kinshasa and Brazzaville) via a mile long bridge over the Congo river. AFP reports that no details have been released on the projected cost or date of completion but both governments swear it’s for real.

And, from the extra-happy news archives, check out this video about the Kinshasa Symphony Orchestra forwarded by the blogger at Congo Resources (who is helping to raise funds for a full length documentary, so get in touch with him if you have extra piles of cash lying around). It made the rounds of the internetz a few months ago, but I somehow missed it, and maybe you did too.

Thanks guys!

  1. And don't forget the DRC's victory in football's African Nations Championship in March. Granted, the tournament is for second-string players and most countries didn't really bother, but a win is a win.
About a million people lined the streets in Kinshasa when the team returned with the trophy and Kabila gave all the players a free car, which was rather nice of him.

  2. This ia a great use of resouces. I bet the bridge pays for itself within a year via postcards.

  3. I dropped onto this blog and I was taken aback but this powerful documentary on the symphonic orchestra.

    Unbelievable, and so powerful …
